Latvia’s FM praises Türkiye’s contributions to NATO
Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braze stated that Türkiye’s efforts for both NATO‘s southern flank and the alliance as a whole are truly commendable. She made this remark during a joint press conference after her meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara, where she expressed her satisfaction with her official visit and emphasized the productive nature of their bilateral relations.
Braze noted that this year marks the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Latvia and Türkiye, highlighting the importance of their partnership. She remarked that they share a significant relationship based on a mutual understanding of the importance of security and defense.
Emphasizing the NATO alliance, Braze pointed out that both countries occupy critical geographical positions. She reiterated her admiration for Türkiye’s contributions to NATO, stating that Türkiye’s commitment to both the southern flank and the entire alliance is commendable.
Braze underscored the significance of security and defense, revealing that Latvia allocates over 3% of its gross domestic product (GDP) to defense and contributes 1% of its budget to support Ukraine for defense and humanitarian purposes.
She mentioned that Latvia is enhancing its borders with Russia and Belarus, noting that these borders also serve as a line of defense for NATO and the European Union.
Braze expressed her satisfaction with the participation of senior Turkish officials at the third Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform, highlighting the importance of supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Opportunities for cooperation between Latvia, Türkiye
Braze pointed out the potential for increased economic collaboration, mentioning that the honorary consulate opened by Latvia in Istanbul aims to strengthen their bilateral relations. She noted that thousands of Latvians visit Türkiye each year and expressed a desire for more Turkish citizens to explore Latvia.
Additionally, Braze mentioned the possibility of exchanging ideas with Türkiye on combating forest fires.
Braze stated that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted the international order, violated the U.N. Charter, compromised regional security, and posed a clear threat to Euro-Atlantic security. She added that there is also a terrorism aspect to consider. Therefore, they have identified two main threats in NATO: Russia and terrorism. She emphasized that cooperation in countering terrorism is essential for the prosperity and security of all nations.
