Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc addressed the criticism regarding the transfer of 14 individuals, including Murat Ongun, who were arrested as part of the investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB).

Tunc clarified that the transfers were made to ensure the investigation’s proper execution and to maintain security within the prisons.

A terrorism and corruption investigation targeting the IBB was launched last month, leading to the arrest of several individuals, including Ekrem Imamoglu, the former mayor of Istanbul.

A recent update in the investigation revealed that some detainees have been moved to correctional facilities in different cities.

In response to provocative posts circulating on social media, Minister Tunc shared the reasoning behind the transfers via his own social media account.

As part of the judicial investigations conducted by the Istanbul Republic Chief Prosecutor’s Office into the suspects, including the executives of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, 14 detainees from the Marmara Correctional Facility have been relocated to other prisons under Article 53 of the Law on the Execution of Penalties and Security Measures. This measure ensures the effective continuation of the investigation and the preservation of security within the correctional facilities.

The claims from some circles suggesting that the detainees’ right to defense has been restricted are unfounded and meant to mislead the public.

These transfers were carried out in full compliance with relevant legal provisions to ensure a fair and effective investigation.
