President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday expressed confidence that Italy will continue its longstanding support for Türkiye’s bid to join the European Union.

Erdogan highlights Italy’s ongoing support for Türkiye’s EU membership

Speaking at a press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome during the fourth intergovernmental summit between Türkiye and Italy, Erdogan said Italy has backed Ankara’s EU membership bid “from the very beginning” and he believes this support will continue.

Türkiye and Italy to strengthen defense industry cooperation

Erdogan emphasized that Ankara will continue enhancing its cooperation with Italy, particularly in the defense industry, through new partnerships and projects. He also noted Italy’s “significant progress” in the defense sector.

Collaboration on regional issues: Focus on Libya and Syria

Erdogan stated that the discussions also covered regional and global matters. He stressed that Türkiye and Italy will continue working together to achieve long-term sustainable solutions to preserve stability and prosperity in Libya.

Turning to Gaza, Erdogan underlined Ankara’s priority of ensuring an immediate cease-fire. “Even the entry of humanitarian aid has not been allowed for the past two months,” he said.

Regarding Syria, Erdogan added, “We are currently focused on the country’s reconstruction, strengthening its institutions, and preserving its territorial integrity.”
