Italian PM suggests link between Russia’s war in Ukraine and Hamas attack on Israel
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni draws connections between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Hamas’ subsequent assault on Israel, emphasizing wider implications in an interview published ahead of her visit to Kyiv
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in an interview published Saturday, suggested a link between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago and the subsequent attack by Hamas militants on Israel last October.
Meloni stated to Italy’s Il Giornale newspaper that, “If Russia had not invaded Ukraine, in all likelihood Hamas would not have launched such an attack against Israel,” referring to the Oct. 7 attack where Hamas militants killed 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped 250 others.
She emphasized that violating international law by a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council would have far-reaching consequences, affecting regions from the Middle East to the Balkans and Africa.
Arriving in Kyiv to mark the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Meloni also expressed support for a two-state solution, asserting that it is “in everyone’s interest, both Israel and Palestine.
