Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Square hosts communal iftar, uniting citizens on the second day of Ramadan

On March 12, 2024, citizens gathered for a communal iftar at Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul, Turkey. This marked the second day of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims.

Since the beginning of Ramadan, it has become a tradition for Muslims to gather at Sultanahmet Square to break their fasts as the sun sets.

The square was packed with people who gathered around a large iftar table. As the call to prayer echoed in the sky, individuals offered prayers before breaking their fasts.

The tables were adorned with various delicacies: fresh bread, olive oil dishes, meat, and sweets. In a spirit of unity and solidarity, people engaged in conversation with their neighbors, sharing meals and drinks together.

Sultanahmet Square’s historic atmosphere added to this special moment’s significance. Magnificent structures dating back to the Ottoman era completed the surrounding scenery.

Amidst the towering minarets, historical mosques, and domes reaching toward the sky, people felt both a spiritual connection and a shared reverence for the sanctity of Ramadan.

During the iftar dinner, acts of charity and generosity were also highlighted. Charity initiatives and donation campaigns for the less fortunate were announced throughout the event. This exemplified another important aspect of Ramadan: a time for aiding those in need and strengthening social solidarity.

The Iftar dinner is about eating a meal and the community coming together to worship, fostering unity and solidarity.

This iftar at Sultanahmet Square will be remembered as a reflection of Istanbul’s historical and cultural fabric.

Such events demonstrate the ability of people to come together, regardless of their diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, to celebrate and share common values.
