Istanbul students protest Israel’s Gaza attacks
Students from 20 Istanbul universities gather at Beyazit Square, protesting Israel’s Gaza attacks. Banners read ‘Stop the genocide,’ ‘Palestine isn’t alone’
On Saturday, students from 20 universities in Istanbul gathered at Beyazit Square to protest against Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza.
Carrying banners in Turkish, English, and Arabic, the students voiced their outrage with slogans such as “Stop the genocide in Palestine,” “The people of Palestine are not alone,” and “Humanity is dying, the world is watching.”
Chanting slogans like “Intifada everywhere, on campus, in the square” and “Israel, the murderer, leave Palestine,” the students expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause and condemned Israel’s actions.
Murat Faruk Alparslan, a student from Istanbul University Faculty of Law, criticized the international community’s silence over Israel’s atrocities in Gaza, which have persisted for over 75 years.
In a statement read in English and Arabic, the students called for an end to the attacks on Rafah to prevent further humanitarian crisis. They also extended support to Hamas and the Qassam Brigades.
“After the brutal killing of more than 35,000 people by Israel, an attack on Rafah will deepen this disaster even further. We reiterate our call for all attacks on Rafah to stop to prevent this humanitarian crisis from deepening further,” the statement said.
Similar protests took place simultaneously in other universities across Türkiye.
Israel continues its attacks on the Gaza Strip despite the U.N. Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.
While thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the clashes, large parts of Gaza have been left in ruins and there is a serious shortage of basic necessities due to the blockade imposed by Israel.
Meanwhile, Israel is facing charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which has called for measures to protect civilians in Gaza and provide humanitarian aid.
According to reports, at least 35,386 Palestinians have lost their lives in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip, with a staggering 15,103 of them being children and 9,849 women. Additionally, 79,366 people have been injured as a result of the violence.
