Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu is currently involved in multiple lawsuits, with two key hearings scheduled for April 11.

On that day, Imamoglu will need to appear in both the Buyukcekmece and Caglayan courts. Additionally, a case concerning the controversial “money counting” footage, which some CHP members believe was filed to damage Imamoglu’s reputation, will also be heard on the same day.

Akin Gurlek case

Imamoglu faces charges following comments he made about Istanbul’s Chief Public Prosecutor, Akin Gurlek, and his family during a panel on Jan. 20. An indictment has been issued, and Imamoglu could face up to seven years and 4 months in prison. The trial for this case is set for April 11.

‘Tender rigging’ case

While serving as Mayor of Beylikduzu, Imamoglu was accused of “interfering with a tender process.” The eighth hearing of this case took place on Jan. 8 at the Buyukcekmece 10th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Imamoglu could face a prison sentence ranging from three to seven years. The prosecutor has requested additional time to prepare their final opinion, and the trial has been postponed to April 11.

Other lawsuits against Imamoglu

Imamoglu is also facing a lawsuit filed by the Supreme Election Board, accusing him of insulting its members. This case has been ongoing for two years, with a prison sentence and political ban being sought.

Additionally, Istanbul’s Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation regarding Imamoglu’s disclosure of a forensic expert’s name during a press conference, alleging an attempt to influence the judiciary.

Imamoglu provided a statement at the courthouse on Jan. 31 concerning the Gurlek remarks and the forensic expert case.

“Money counting” footage case

In relation to the controversial “money counting” footage, which was allegedly filmed at the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters, 22 individuals—including members of Imamoglu’s team—are being tried. The second hearing of this case took place on Nov. 29, and the trial has been postponed to April 11.

Due to the limited capacity of the 59th Criminal Court of First Instance, the case was moved to the 27th Heavy Penal Court.

The indictment seeks prison sentences ranging from 6 months to 1 year for the 22 defendants, including former mayors, CHP officials, and executives from Imamoglu’s construction company. The charges are related to illegal donations, loans, and debts under the Political Parties Law.
