Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu is facing a new investigation over allegations that his university diploma is fake.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a probe into forgery of an official document. Imamoglu was summoned to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on February 26 to give his statement.

The investigation comes right after Imamoglu secured his candidacy for the CHP’s presidential primary by winning 116 out of 133 votes from party deputies. The timing has sparked political tensions, as Imamoglu remains a key opposition figure.

Other allegations

Imamoglu is also under investigation for allegedly threatening Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Akin Gurlek and his family during a recent TV appearance.

He is accused of targeting expert witnesses involved in ongoing legal cases, allegedly attempting to obstruct judicial proceedings.

The investigation could have major political implications, potentially impacting Imamoglu’s presidential bid and his position as Istanbul mayor. His legal team has yet to issue an official statement.
