Meteorology expert Professor Orhan Sen has predicted significant snowfall in Istanbul, with depths reaching up to 10 centimeters. According to Sen, a mix of rain and snow is expected on Wednesday, February 19, followed by a strong snowstorm over the upcoming weekend.

Speaking on CNN Turk, Professor Sen noted that the snowfall from February 21 to 23 will likely surpass previous levels, bringing harsher winter conditions to the city. “Compared to the last snowfall, we might see 2-3 centimeters more this time. There is a possibility of reaching 10 centimeters,” he stated.

Cold weather to grip Istanbul and surrounding regions

Professor Sen highlighted that the snowfall will not be limited to Istanbul but will also affect the western Black Sea region and the northwestern parts of Central Anatolia. He also warned of fog and ice accumulation in Central Anatolia, posing potential risks for transportation.

Starting on Monday, February 17, strong rainfall is expected in the Marmara region, causing temperatures to drop to 7-8 degrees Celsius. “Sunday will be around 12 degrees, but by Monday, temperatures will decline by 4-5 degrees. By Wednesday, colder air will move in, leading to a mix of rain and snow. However, the most intense snowfall will arrive over the weekend,” he explained.

Siberian winds to bring intense snowfall

Professor Sen emphasized that the upcoming snowstorm will be stronger due to northern and northeastern winds originating from Siberia. “These winds, combined with high-pressure systems and the sea effect, will bring snowfall to the Marmara and western Black Sea regions,” he said.

With temperatures expected to drop to 4 degrees Celsius over the weekend, Istanbul is set to experience one of its heaviest snowfalls of the season. Professor Sen also noted that Ankara will see snow on Sunday and Monday, while Istanbul will first encounter mixed rain and snow midweek before transitioning to full snowfall by the weekend.
