Election results in Türkiye prompt pointed response from Israel as FM claims ‘incitement against Israel is no longer working’

Opposition candidates in Türkiye’s local elections have taken the lead in major cities, signaling a potential challenge to President Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AK Party).

In a notable victory in Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, the incumbent mayor from Türkiye’s main opposition party CHP, has secured a lead in the mayoral race based on partial vote counts.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz commented on the election outcomes amid these developments.

“Defeat for Erdogan’s candidates in the local elections in Türkiye. Congratulations to the winners,” Katz stated, directly addressing Imamoglu’s and Yavas’s victories.

He further added, “A clear message to Erdogan – the incitement against Israel is no longer working, look for another horse.”

This statement comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Türkiye and Israel following President Erdogan’s recent likening of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to a “modern-day Nazi” and his condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
