Iraq can play a key role in Türkiye-Syria normalization
Answering questions from journalist Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani announced that he is trying to mediate between Türkiye and Syria.
In his statement, Sudani emphasized that the security of Syria means the security and stability of Iraq. “Iraq played an active role in establishing rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran. There is now a special relationship between them, which was certainly not easy to achieve. The relations were tense, but we succeeded, and the region benefited. This is our goal,” Sudani said, highlighting Iraq’s geopolitical significance.
“We have taken on such a role to see how the countries of the region can harmonize with each other. We are trying to create a foundation for reconciliation and dialogue between Syria and Türkiye.”
Sudani said that he had already spoken to Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad about this issue and added, “Negotiations are ongoing, and, God willing, there will be some steps in this context soon.”
Sudani also mentioned that he had asked Erdogan to provide more facilities for Iraqi tourists traveling to Türkiye, adding that many people from Iraq want to reside in Türkiye and buy houses.
