Iran’s foreign minister meets with Syria’s leader
Iranian foreign minister, in a meeting with Syria’s regime leader, urges U.S. to cease support for Israel amid Gaza conflict, affirms unified position with Syria
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian met Sunday with Syrian regime leader Bashar Assad in Damascus. During the meeting, Amirabdollahian handed Assad an invitation from Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to visit Tehran. Assad accepted the invitation and congratulated Iran on the 45th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
This is the second leg of Amirabdollahian’s tour. In the first leg, he met with senior Lebanese government officials and leaders of Palestinian groups based in Beirut on Saturday.
During his meeting with Assad, the Iranian foreign minister characterized Israel’s offensive in Gaza as the “central issue” on both regional and international fronts, highlighting a unified stance between Tehran and Damascus on the matter.
He emphasized that the Raisi administration has undertaken “significant diplomatic endeavors” to halt the conflict, which has resulted in over 28,000 casualties since Oct. 7. These efforts have been communicated to both the U.S. and the U.K.
Consistent with his statements during a joint press briefing with Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib, Iran’s top diplomat reiterated that if the U.S. aims to prevent further escalation in the region, it must cease its support for Israel’s actions.
