France accuses Russia of disinformation campaign targeting Ukraine’s Western allies
French officials accuse Russia of conducting an extensive disinformation campaign targeting Ukraine’s Western allies, aiming to manipulate public opinion
French government officials have accused Russia of orchestrating an extensive online manipulation campaign aimed at undermining support for Ukraine among its Western allies.
According to the French foreign ministry, Russia had intensified its efforts to disseminate disinformation and sow deception, mainly targeting Ukraine’s allies in Europe such as Poland, Germany and France.
They highlighted the dissemination of messages across social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and websites like Sputnik as being “extensive in scale” and “sophisticated in design.”
The primary objective of Russia’s disinformation campaign, officials stated, remains consistent: to amplify Russia’s perceived achievements in the conflict, rationalize its military intervention, undermine Ukraine’s defense efforts, erode civilian resilience against ongoing attacks, and fracture Western support for Ukraine’s military and arms supply to Kyiv.
Furthermore, French authorities allege that Russia’s disinformation efforts extend beyond the Ukrainian conflict, encompassing attempts to influence high-stakes elections in the U.K., the European Union and the United States.
They claim Russia seeks to disrupt major sporting events such as the Paris Olympics and the UEFA European Championship in Germany.
