FM Fidan stresses economic development as key to lasting peace at G20 meeting

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that peace cannot be sustained without economic growth and prosperity, highlighting the fragility of peace in regions such as Syria and Gaza.

Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Fidan called for global efforts to support economic development in conflict-prone areas.

The importance of economic stability for peace

Fidan warned that peace remains fragile in many parts of the world, stating, “Unless peace is supported by economic growth and prosperity, it cannot be permanent. In Syria, Gaza, and many other regions, peace remains highly vulnerable. Unless we introduce genuine economic recovery and development initiatives in these areas, peace efforts will be short-lived.”

The Turkish foreign minister delivered his remarks during the session on “G20 Goals for 2025: Evaluating South Africa’s G20 Presidency, High-Level Outcomes, and the Future of G20,” where he urged renewed efforts to maintain the G20 as the leading platform for international economic cooperation.

Strengthening global governance and regional cooperation

Fidan underscored the need for a more inclusive and representative global governance system to safeguard international peace and security.

He pointed out that emerging economies and regional players should be more involved in decision-making processes.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the G20 and regional organizations such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the African Union.

He highlighted initiatives such as the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor and the Development Road Project as key examples of fostering regional connectivity and economic collaboration.

Addressing migration, food security, and inflation

Fidan called for fair burden-sharing in addressing migration and refugee crises and emphasized the need to support host countries through sustainable frameworks.

He also highlighted the importance of improving coordination in global efforts to tackle food security, inflation, and supply chain disruptions.

“G20 can play a more effective role in shaping a stable global order by recognizing the link between geo-economics and geopolitics. Economic diplomacy channels can be utilized to bridge geopolitical divisions and address emerging global challenges,” Fidan stated.

Türkiye’s role in G20 and global economic diplomacy

Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to contributing to the G20’s vision, stating, “In this context, G20’s role as a geo-economic stabilizer should be enhanced. Türkiye is ready to support this vision.”
