Finance Minister Simsek demands ‘more respectful language’ from opposition leader

Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek strongly rejected allegations made by main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel regarding a report from Türkiye’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK).
“The opposition leader needs to use more respectful language. Lying and slander do not suit Mr. Ozel,” Simsek said in a statement shared on social media Saturday.
The finance minister characterized Ozel’s persistent accusations as “an assassination of character” that “cannot be presented under the guise of politics,” despite numerous explanations refuting what he called “baseless claims.”
Simsek clarified the technical nature of the MASAK document in question, explaining that the board sends information directly to prosecutors when requested, without seeking approval or direction from any authority, as mandated by Türkiye’s Criminal Procedure Law regarding confidentiality of investigations.
“The report Mr. Ozel mentions is merely a technical document containing data without any commentary,” Simsek stated. “All reports prepared by MASAK, regardless of whether they are drafted by experts or assistant experts, have the same legal effect and validity under MASAK regulations.”
The public exchange highlights ongoing tensions between Türkiye’s government and the opposition CHP, with the finance minister insisting that the leader of the main opposition party should maintain a more dignified tone in political discourse.
