Farmers’ tractor protests intensify in Madrid as hundreds of tractors flood the city, demanding government action and causing disruptions to city traffic

Hundreds of tractors flood the downtown area of Spain’s capital, Madrid, with hundreds more encircling the city as farmers continue their protests countrywide.

The protest in Madrid is being led by Uniones de Uniones, the fourth-largest agricultural union in Spain, which is not engaged in dialogue with the government regarding its demands.

Tensions are rising between the massive demonstration and authorities, as protesters refuse to vacate the Puerta de Alcala until approximately 1,500 tractors attempting to enter the center of Madrid are allowed through by the police.

Meanwhile, protests are also taking place in provinces outside Madrid, as they have been for over two consecutive weeks. According to Spain’s highway monitoring system, tractors and protesting farmers are disrupting traffic and staging demonstrations in areas such as Ciudad Real, Murcia and Zaragoza.

Last week, following a meeting with Spain’s three largest farmers’ unions, which have also been key organizers of recent protests, the Spanish government announced several measures to address the farmers’ concerns.

However, while the unions view these measures positively, they believe the solutions are not comprehensive enough. These measures range from implementing stricter import controls to easing digital reporting requirements.

The farmers’ demands are also directed toward Brussels and each of Spain’s regional governments, addressing local issues such as wolf populations, water management and bureaucratic inefficiencies.
