The European Union launched the Aspides naval mission in the Red Sea to safeguard cargo ships amid ongoing Houthi threats

The European Union launched a naval mission on Monday aimed at safeguarding cargo ships in the Red Sea amid ongoing threats from Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Named Aspides, meaning “shield” in Greek, the mission will operate from Larissa, Greece, under the leadership of Greek Commodore Vasilios Griparis.

Houthi rebels’ attacks on vessels, often with unclear ties to Israel, have disrupted maritime traffic along a crucial trade route connecting Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

While U.S. and British forces have conducted airstrikes against Houthi targets, the EU mission will focus solely on maritime operations, providing situational awareness, escorting vessels, and defending against potential sea-based attacks, as stated by EU headquarters following approval from the bloc’s foreign ministers.

Addressing reporters in Brussels, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the widespread impact of Houthi missile threats on the global economy, not solely on European vessels in the Red Sea.

Baerbock underscored the mission’s significance in demonstrating international unity against attacks on maritime freedom, noting Germany’s contribution of a frigate alongside Belgium’s participation.
