EU Commission president in Kyiv for Russia-Ukraine war anniversary
European Commission President von der Leyen reiterates support for Ukraine in Kyiv on the second anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed her unwavering support for Kyiv on the second anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War.
Von der Leyen announced on her X account that she had traveled to Kyiv on the anniversary of the war that Russia initiated in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
The president of the European Commission stated, “We will continue to provide financial, economic, military, and ethical support until Ukraine is entirely free.”
Von der Leyen was joined by Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander de Croo.
Von der Leyen, along with European Council President Charles Michel and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, had previously issued a joint statement on the anniversary of the war, emphasizing the ongoing support for Ukraine in economic, military, and defense areas.
The fact that the statement was made in the names of the leaders of the three institutions of the EU rather than on behalf of the EU as a whole has attracted attention.
It later emerged that the statement couldn’t be issued with the unanimous consent of all member countries due to opposition from Hungary.
