Erdogan’s Europe Day message stresses concerns, calls for EU co-op

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan calls for enhanced cooperation with the European Union on Europe Day, expressing concerns over certain European policies amid the Gaza crisis

In a message released for Europe Day on Thursday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted concerns over the policies of some European institutions and countries in the context of the Gaza crisis, stating that they have undermined faith in European values.

Erdogan noted that May 9, the day the Schuman Declaration was issued, marking the foundations of European integration, has been observed in Türkiye as “Europe Day” since the country was granted candidate status for the European Union in 1999.

He emphasized that Europe Day not only marks the beginning of European political and economic integration but also commemorates the peace and stability achieved through years of joint efforts. However, Erdogan pointed out that challenges such as wars, conflicts, terrorism, irregular migration, and climate change threaten stability both globally and in Europe.

Türkiye ready to collaborate with Europe

Erdogan expressed readiness to work together for a European landscape where Türkiye rightfully holds its place, stating, “We are ready to work together for a Europe where our country takes its deserved place.” He continued by addressing concerns such as rising Islamophobia, xenophobia, and racism in Europe, which are significant sources of worry for both Turkish communities and immigrants living in Europe.

Regarding the Gaza crisis, where he mentioned that 15,000 children and a total of 35,000 Palestinians have been killed, Erdogan criticized the policies of some European institutions and countries, stating that they have undermined faith in European values.

Amid a critical juncture where enlargement policy gains momentum, Erdogan emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in all areas, including accession negotiations, to strengthen the foundation of relations between Türkiye and the EU.

He urged the EU to conduct its relations with Türkiye based on the principle of loyalty and a results-oriented approach, avoiding policies and rhetoric that deadlock relations. Erdogan also emphasized that Türkiye will not hesitate to use and develop its strategic capabilities in the face of exclusionary policies directed towards the country.

In conclusion, Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s readiness to collaborate for a more prosperous, solidarity-based, and open Europe where the country rightfully occupies its place. He extended his congratulations on Europe Day to all Europeans, including Turkish citizens.
