Erdogan rejects federalism proposals for Cyprus island, calls for new solutions
President Erdogan condemned proposals advocating federalism for Cyprus as unacceptable during a speech at the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party)’s parliamentary group meeting.
The Turkish president reflected on the past, saying: “In 2004, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was punished for supporting the Annan Plan (also known as the Cyprus Unification Plan), while Greek Cypriots who opposed it were rewarded.”
“Negotiations yielded no results then, and old methods will not work now. Both we and the Turkish Cypriots are frustrated with federalism-based proposals,” the president added.
Erdogan emphasized ongoing efforts to secure broader recognition for the TRNC, stating: “Our objective is to enhance the recognition of the TRNC, and we remain resolute in our pursuit.”
Addressing regional diplomacy, Erdogan underscored the AK Party government’s commitment to fostering positive relationships with neighbors.
“We do not seek to create tensions with our neighbors. Instead, we aim to expand our circle of friends both regionally and globally. We approach this policy with sincerity, determination, and goodwill. No opportunity for dialogue will be left unpursued,” he maintained.
