Erdogan reaffirms Türkiye’s commitment to lifting sanctions on Syria in meeting with al-Sharaa

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Syrian Vice President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Friday that Ankara will continue its diplomatic efforts to lift international sanctions on Syria.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

“During the meeting, President Erdogan stated that Türkiye welcomes the fact that those seeking to cause chaos in Syria are not given an opportunity, adding that the coming years will be ones of stability, prosperity, and peace in Syria,” according to a statement from Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.

Erdogan also emphasized the importance of boosting efforts to revive commercial and economic cooperation with Syria and suggested that steps in other areas could be considered.

Türkiye committed to support Syria’s stabilization

“President Erdogan underlined that Türkiye will continue to support Syria’s stabilization efforts, just as it has done so far,” the directorate added.

The three-day Antalya Diplomacy Forum, which began in the Turkish resort city of Antalya on Friday, is focused on the theme “Reclaiming Diplomacy in a Fragmented World.”

The event gathers global leaders, policymakers, and experts to address pressing global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, inequality, violence, and climate change, while exploring ways diplomacy can restore stability and promote international cooperation.
