Erdogan praises EU’s decision to suspend Syria sanctions in call with France’s Macron
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told French President Emmanuel Macron in a phone call on Friday that the European Union’s decision last month to suspend sanctions on Syria was a step in the right direction, according to Türkiye‘s Communications Directorate.
Erdogan emphasized the importance of lifting sanctions in the post-Assad era, reaffirming Türkiye’s ongoing support for Syria. Meanwhile, Erdogan on Tuesday held talks with interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa as new Syrian president made his first official visit to Türkiye.
Ahmed al-Sharaa has been authorized to establish a temporary legislative council to govern Syria until a permanent constitution is adopted.
Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s regime leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963. A new administration led by Al-Sharaa has now taken control of the country.
The two leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral ties, regional issues, and global concerns during their conversation.
Erdogan underscored that increasing dialogue between Türkiye and France would help strengthen their relationship, highlighting potential cooperation in areas such as the defense industry.
In addition, Erdogan called for the preservation of the current ceasefire between Palestinian group Hamas and Israel and stressed the need to begin work toward a lasting solution in the region.
