Erdogan optimistic about US-Türkiye ties under Trump administration

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed optimism Friday about strengthening relations with the United States during President Donald Trump’s second term, emphasizing personal ties between the leaders as a foundation for improved bilateral cooperation.
Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Erdogan highlighted the importance of the U.S. as a strategic partner for Türkiye and pointed to his personal rapport with Trump as a catalyst for better relations.
“I believe that our relations with the U.S. will flourish in every field during President Trump’s second term, also with the contribution of our close friendship with him,” Erdogan said.

President outlined ambitious economic goals between the two NATO allies, emphasizing a target that would represent a significant expansion of current trade volumes.
“We attach great importance to our goal of reaching a $100 billion trade target with our ally and strategic partner, the US,” he stated.
Erdogan’s comments come as global trade faces increasing challenges from protectionist policies. The Turkish leader addressed these concerns directly, suggesting Türkiye is well-positioned to navigate the current economic landscape.
“We are doing everything we can to prevent the heated trade competition through customs tariffs from becoming destructive,” Erdogan said. “Türkiye will be one of the winners of this process.”
