Erdogan-Mitsotakis positive meeting sets tone ahead of Turkish Cyprus July 20 anniversary
Greek media reported that the meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the U.S. went well. They noted that July 20, marking the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Peace Operation in Cyprus, will test the relations between the two countries.
On this day, Erdogan will visit the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), while Mitsotakis will be in Greek Cypriot. Türkiye plans to hold a parade featuring 50 ships, including the TCG Anadolu.
Greek government sources described the meeting as positive and constructive, noting that Erdogan appeared “more sincere and relaxed than ever,” which positively impacted the discussion atmosphere.
According to reports from Athens, the leaders reviewed the developments in Turkish-Greek relations since Mitsotakis’s visit to Ankara on May 13. They agreed to maintain the current calm environment, further develop trade relations, and meet again at the U.N. General Assembly in New York in September.
