Erdogan condemns FETO in 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day speech
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a strong message during the 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day commemoration on Monday, condemning those responsible for the 2016 coup attempt.
He described the perpetrators as “traitors who extended their dirty hands to our homeland from abroad” and emphasized that their actions have left a “black mark” on history. Erdogan asserted that neither he nor the nation would forgive the “traitors” or those who lost 252 lives that night. “The blood they shed has stained our history,” he said.
Addressing attendees at the Presidential Complex, Erdogan highlighted that the pain and anger from the events of 8 years ago remain fresh. He affirmed the country’s unwavering determination to fight against FETO and any form of guardianship, stating, “Our resolve is as strong and vigorous today as it was on the first day.” Erdogan emphasized that there would be no concessions in their fight against this network of betrayal.
The President also praised the unity demonstrated by the nation during the 15 July coup attempt, stating that Türkiye is united today just as it was on the night of the coup. “We are shoulder to shoulder, one, united, and together as one nation,” he remarked. Erdogan highlighted the bravery of citizens who stood against the coup plotters, noting the significance of this unity in overcoming the threat.
Erdogan also thanked those who supported Türkiye from abroad and those who prayed for the nation’s victory. He specifically acknowledged the Turkish Armed Forces, police forces, and the National Intelligence Organization for their efforts during the coup attempt. “I extend my gratitude to the brave members of our military, police, and intelligence services,” he said.
Reflecting on the role of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) during the coup attempt, Erdogan praised the institution for its steadfastness and bravery. “The TBMM once again showed it is the people’s assembly and the representative of national will,” he stated. He expressed his appreciation for the Assembly’s role in standing against the coup attempt.
Erdogan also addressed the presence of some individuals who supported the coup attempt or sympathized with the coup plotters. He condemned those who wished for the coup’s success and expressed shame over their actions. “We remember with shame those who supported the coup plotters,” he said.
In closing, Erdogan reiterated the importance of maintaining vigilance and ensuring justice while avoiding creating new conflicts between citizens and the state. “We will proceed with sensitivity until the last coup plotter is brought to justice,” he assured. He prayed that the country would never experience such dark times again, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to protecting the nation’s unity and democratic values.
