Dialogue, cooperation key to prosperity for future generations of Turks, Greeks: FM Fidan
Dialogue and cooperation are essential for the prosperity of future generations of Turks and Greeks, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday.
In an interview with Greek daily Ta Nea, Fidan praised recent improvements in Turkish-Greek relations, attributing the progress to the efforts of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Türkiye’s vision of ‘Aegean Peace’
FM Fidan expressed Türkiye’s commitment to fostering a “sea of peace” in the Aegean and emphasized that the national interests of both countries can best be achieved through friendship and cooperation.
He noted that, while longstanding maritime boundary issues persist, numerous interconnected disputes should be addressed through ‘mutual respect and realistic solutions.’
Constructive dialogue with Greek Foreign Minister
FM Fidan underscored the importance of open and honest communication with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis to prevent tensions from escalating into crises.
“We may disagree on several issues, but the benefits of maintaining open channels have been clear,” he stated.
Environmental cooperation, concerns
Addressing Greece’s potential proposed marine park in the Aegean Sea, Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s openness to cooperation but warned against using environmental issues for political purposes.
He expressed optimism about the future of Turkish-Greek relations, highlighting dialogue and collaboration as the only viable path to security and prosperity for future generations.
Cyprus issue: Emphasizing ground realities
On the Cyprus issue, Fidan dismissed the idea of island reunification but called for a solution that respects the realities on the ground. He emphasized the need for a vision ensuring peace, security and sovereignty for both Turkish and Greek Cypriots.
