CHP Deputy threatens to cut tongue of journalist, causing backlash

Main opposition party CHP’s delegation investigating violence in Syria’s Latakia region delivered impassioned remarks in Türkiye’s Arsuz district on Sunday, with Parliamentary Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Basarir using particularly strong language against his critics.
In an emotionally charged moment during the press conference, Basarir responded to what he described as an offensive article in Yeni Safak newspaper against the CHP leadership.
“Yesterday I saw a despicable article: A so-called writer from Yeni Safak newspaper said about our Chairman and us, ‘you always find a dog to defend you,'” Basarir stated. “If Ali Mahir Basarir and his friends live and I don’t cut that tongue of yours, if I ever show you the light of day, may God curse me.”
Directing his comments to government officials, Basarir continued: “Hey justice minister, prosecutors, judges. What more are you waiting for? As of this hour, that despicable person who spews filth from his mouth continues to write.”

The heated remarks came during a broader discussion of the situation in Syria’s Latakia region, where CHP delegation members expressed alarm over reports of violence against civilians, particularly members of the Alawite community.
“This is our issue. If even one person dies, this is a matter of outrage for us. I promise we will hold those responsible to account,” Basarir added, calling for immediate humanitarian corridors and international intervention.
The delegation, including CHP Vice President Burhanettin Bulut and several parliament members, met with local citizens in Hatay province before making their public statements. They emphasized their commitment to pushing for peace in the region and protecting civilian lives.
“We are calling on Ankara, all parties, all chairpersons, Europe, and the United Nations,” Basarir said. “Look at Syria without delay and stop the bloodshed. Open the humanitarian corridor in that region immediately.”
