At the LAAD Defense and Security 2025 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s Defense Minister, Jose Mucio, confirmed that the country is in talks with Poland, Türkiye, and Finland regarding potential sales of Embraer’s KC-390 military aircraft.

The announcement follows Sweden’s confirmation earlier this week that it will purchase four units of the aircraft.

Ongoing negotiations for expanding KC-390 reach

“Negotiations to expand the KC-390’s customer base are ongoing, and we are optimistic,” Mucio said, highlighting the growing international interest in the Brazilian-made aircraft.

The KC-390, designed by Embraer, is a military transport aircraft that competes in the same class as the C-130 Hercules, combining civilian technology with military capabilities.

About the KC-390 aircraft

The KC-390 is a versatile military transport jet designed for various missions, including cargo airlift, troop transport, and aerial refueling.

The aircraft features Airbus A320-type V2500 engines, commonly used in commercial jets, contributing to its efficiency and reliability. With a cargo capacity of 26 tons, the KC-390 can operate on short, semi-prepared runways, making it highly adaptable for diverse operational environments.

It can carry 66 fully-equipped soldiers or paratroopers and is capable of performing MEDEVAC (medical evacuation) missions).

The KC-390 is equipped with fly-by-wire technology, offering improved control and safety. The aircraft has a range of 2,000 kilometers and can take off from runways as short as 1,500 meters with a 23-ton payload. It can also be used for air drops, in-flight refueling, and firefighting operations.

Embassy discussions and technology partnerships

In addition to the sales discussions with Poland, Türkiye, and Finland, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), a Turkish aerospace manufacturer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Embraer at the LAAD 2025 event.

The agreement will focus on joint production activities, technology transfer, and R&D collaborations, further expanding the global reach of Embraer’s aerospace innovations.

Key specifications of the KC-390

  • Maximum takeoff weight: 74,400 kg
  • Cargo capacity: 26 tons
  • Transport capacity: 84 military personnel
  • Length: 35.2 meters
  • Wingspan: 35.05 meters
  • Range: 2,000 kilometers
  • Takeoff distance: 1,500 meters with 23 tons of cargo

With global interest in the KC-390 growing, Brazil’s defense industry continues to expand its reach through strategic partnerships and international sales efforts.

The aircraft’s advanced design, versatility, and cost-effectiveness make it an attractive option for several nations looking to modernize their military fleets.
