President Joe Biden signs an order providing 18 months of protection from deportation to Palestinians in the U.S., citing worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza

U.S. President Joe Biden has issued an order granting protection from deportation to Palestinians residing in the U.S. for the next 18 months, as stated by the White House on Wednesday.

The decision, known as “deferred enforced departure,” extends to approximately 6,000 Palestinians, according to a Biden administration official.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan cited the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip following Israel’s extensive military operations in the region.

Sullivan emphasized that the order aims to provide Palestinians in the U.S. with a temporary refuge, with the provision that individuals forfeit their protections if they voluntarily return to the Palestinian territories.
