Biden considers Trump’s NATO remarks ‘dangerous and un-American’
Biden confronts Trump’s NATO stance as undermining U.S. commitments while advocating for a significant aid package he considers vital for international alliances
President Joe Biden vehemently criticized former President Donald Trump’s comments on NATO in a recent address, describing them as ‘dangerous’ and ‘un-American.’
Trump had suggested that the U.S. might not defend NATO allies under certain conditions, sparking concern across Europe.
“No other president in our history has ever bowed down to a Russian dictator,” Biden exclaimed. “Well, let me say this as clearly as possible: I never will. For God’s sake, it’s dumb, it’s shameful, it’s dangerous, it’s un-American.”
Biden’s remarks followed the Senate’s approval of a significant foreign aid package, which includes support for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
Biden emphasized the bill’s importance: “Supporting this bill is standing up to Putin. Opposing it is playing into Putin’s hands.”
Trump’s stance on NATO has raised alarms, particularly with his possible candidacy in the upcoming presidential election. He has been vocal in opposing further funding for Ukraine, complicating the bill’s passage in the Republican-controlled House.
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed reservations about the aid package, highlighting the absence of border enforcement provisions. “The mandate of national security supplemental legislation was to secure America’s border before sending additional foreign aid around the world,” he said.
“In the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters. America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo,” Johnson added.
Addressing the bill’s broader implications, Biden said: “The whole world heard it. And the worst thing is, he means it. No other president in our history has ever bowed down to a Russian dictator.” He further urged the House Republicans to pass the bill, stressing unity and America’s commitment to its allies.
