Azerbaijan’s establishment of the Azerbaijan-Turkish Cyprus Parliamentary Relations Working Group is hailed as a ‘historic decision’ and a step toward the TRNC’s diplomatic recognition

In the Azerbaijani National Assembly, the establishment of the Azerbaijan-Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliamentary Relations Working Group is seen as a “historic decision” and “a step toward the diplomatic recognition process of the TRNC.”

During the Ordinary General Assembly Meeting held on April 5, the decision to establish the “Azerbaijan-TRNC Parliamentary Relations Working Group” was welcomed with satisfaction not only in Azerbaijan but also in Türkiye and the TRNC.

President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, expressed his gratitude by calling President Ilham Aliyev, while Deputy President of the Republic of Türkiye, Cevdet Yilmaz, emphasized that Türkiye, Azerbaijan and the TRNC are “three states, one nation.”

A step toward diplomatic recognition of TRNC

The Chairperson of the Azerbaijan-TRNC Parliamentary Relations Working Group, Cavansir Feyziyev said: “This is a step toward the diplomatic recognition process of the TRNC.

I am confident that this situation will later be reflected in inter-state relations and create relationships regulated by international law between our states.”

Emphasizing the significant responsibility of the task at hand, Feyziyev said: “We are aware of our responsibility and will work accordingly. The relations between Azerbaijan and the TRNC will set an example for other Turkic states, and we expect similar steps to be taken in the Turkic republics of Central Asia.”

Feyziyev also indicated that they would discuss issues related to the international recognition of the TRNC as an independent state, stating: “The TRNC will one day join the United Nations as a member among independent states. Every Turk living in the TRNC has the right to this. It is the duty of every Turkic state, every Turkic person to stand by them in their legitimate cause.”

‘No one can ignore the Turkish presence in Cyprus’

Türkiye’s Ambassador to Baku, Cahit Bagci, described the establishment of the Azerbaijan-TRNC Parliamentary Relations Working Group as a “historic decision.”

Bagci expressed that the decision was met with joy in Türkiye, stating: “These steps will undoubtedly eliminate the isolations towards the TRNC by the international community. There is a Turkish state there. No one can ignore the Turkish presence in Cyprus.”

‘I am confident that greater steps will be taken in the future’

Representative of the TRNC in Baku, Ufuk Turganer, stated that the Working Group is a significant step toward furthering diplomatic, economic, historical and cultural relations between Azerbaijan and the TRNC.

Turganer expressed the TRNC’s great satisfaction with the decision, stating: “I am confident that greater steps will be taken in the future.”
