Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas delivered pointed criticism at the Republican People’s Party (CHP)’s Second Century Change Congress, marking a significant moment of dissent within the party.

The tension between Türkiye’s main opposition CHP’s potential presidential candidates dominated the congress.

Ankara Mayor Yavas revealed that he received information about the decision to allow only two mayors to speak at the event just an hour before his speech.

Yavas pointed out that such practices could exacerbate internal party disputes, stating, “We have been opposing the ongoing debate of ‘Ekrem or Mansur?’ for months. We are 14 metropolitan mayors. Only giving the floor to two of us feels like a bank up the fire.”

Yavas expressed frustration over the short notice for his speech and lamented not having enough time to prepare a substantial address.

“I don’t want to create controversy, but I would have liked to make a speech addressing Türkiye’s issues, just like Ekrem Imamoglu. Regrettably, I received only an hour’s notice before my speech. Even if there is no malice intended, such arrangements can deepen party issues,” he maintained.

Yavas emphasized the importance of all mayors having a chance to speak and better planning speeches.

Ozel’s response to Yavas’ criticism

Following Yavas’ comments, Türkiye’s main opposition CHP leader Ozgur Ozel addressed the issue. He acknowledged the shortcomings in organizing the event, saying: “There may be shortcomings in such arrangements. The responsibility for this lies with me as the general chairman. If I have overlooked any individual’s right, I will take action.”

Ozel stressed that all mayors are equally important and hoped the party would maintain unity and solidarity despite these issues.

Imamoglu’s reply

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu responded to Yavas’s criticisms, stating he was unaware of the specifics regarding the list of speakers. “Had I known this would upset you, I would have withdrawn my speech and taken a seat,” he said.

Imamoglu acknowledged the concerns and stressed the importance of mutual understanding and cooperation within the party.

Implications, reactions

CHP’s Constitutional Congress highlighted some internal tensions and communication issues within the party. Mansur Yavas’s criticism brought attention to organizational and procedural shortcomings.

While Ozel and Imamoglu’s responses aimed to reassure and emphasize party unity, the incident raises questions about how such issues will be addressed in the future.

The congress has the potential to influence not only internal party dynamics but also the party’s public image and overall strategy.
