Alexei Navalny’s mother files lawsuit for release of son’s body
Mother of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny files lawsuit against Russia’s Investigative Committee for withholding her son’s body
Lyudmila Navalnaya, the mother of the late Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, has filed a lawsuit against Russia’s Investigative Committee over the delay in the release of her son’s body.
The lawsuit, aimed at addressing what was deemed as “illegal actions and decisions,” will be heard in a closed-door session on March 4 at the Salekhard city court.
Navalnaya made the journey to the IK-3 penal colony in the Arctic following the news of her son’s passing and has been seeking the release of his body since Saturday.
This legal action comes after Navalnaya’s public plea to President Vladimir Putin, urging the immediate release of her son’s body for a dignified burial.
The Investigative Committee of Russia had earlier stated they would not release Navalny’s body, citing a 14-day examination process. According to reports, Navalny’s mother was informed that her son’s death was due to “sudden death syndrome.”
Navalny’s wife has raised concerns that authorities are withholding the body to hide any evidence of possible poisoning.
