The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MSB) said that 11 PKK/YPG terrorists were eliminated in northern Iraq.

“Unpredictable, unusual, rapid and continuous. Our heroic Turkish Armed Forces neutralized 11 PKK terrorists detected in Asos and Operation Claw-Lock regions in northern Iraq. Our struggle will continue with determination and resolve,” the ministry said on social media.

Türkiye’s claw series operation

Due to the authority vacuum in northern Iraq, the so-called Hakurk, Metina, Zap, Gara, Avaşin-Basyan, Sinat-Haftanin, Kandil and Asos regions had become an area used by the PKK/YPG and its supporters for recruitment, shelter, logistical support and preparation of attacks against Türkiye.

The terrorist organization was attempting to infiltrate to Türkiye and carry out terrorist acts by exploiting the region and poisoning the personnel it recruited. These regions were also defined by the terrorist organization as impenetrable and inaccessible.

In order to ensure the security of Türkiye’s borders in advance and to ensure that Turkish citizens live in a peaceful environment, a multidimensional security approach was adopted and a comprehensive conceptual change was made in the fight against terrorism with a strategic foresight by the Turkish Armed Forces. The strategy of ensuring the security of Türkiye’s borders in advance and eliminating terrorism at its source has been put into practice.

Within the framework of Turkish Armed Forces’ proactive security strategy based on destroying terrorism at its source, as of May 27, 2019, in order to eliminate terrorist attacks against Turkish people and security forces from the North of Iraq by neutralizing PKK/YPG and other terrorist elements and to ensure Türkiye’s border security; Claw series operations were launched in line with Türkiye’s rights of self-defense arising from international law.
