Türkiye humbled by Italy again, set for bronze in women’s volleyball at Paris Olympics
Türkiye’s quest for Olympic gold was thwarted once more as they lost 3-0 to Italy in the Women’s Volleyball semi-final at the 2024 Olympics. Despite the defeat, Turkish women’s volleyball team still has a chance to secure a medal as they prepare to face Brazil in the bronze medal match.
The semi-final, held at the Paris South Arena 1, was tightly contested, with Italy ultimately claiming the third set 25-22 to secure their place in the final. Italy took the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-19, with Türkiye showing strong performances but falling short in critical moments.
Italy’s group stage dominance
In their earlier group stage meeting, Italy defeated Türkiye 3-0. The match, held at the South Paris Arena, saw Italy quickly establish a lead, going up 7-2. Despite a timeout by Türkiye’s head coach Daniele Santarelli, Italy maintained their momentum and won the first set 25-14.
The second set was closely contested, with both teams reaching a 6-6 tie before Italy surged ahead to win 25-16. The third set saw Türkiye take an early lead at 8-6, but Italy fought back to secure the set 25-21 and win the match. This victory ensured Italy’s top position in Group C and set up their successful knockout rounds.
Looking ahead
Türkiye will now compete against Brazil for the bronze medal, with the match scheduled to follow the final. While Türkiye’s gold medal hopes have been dashed, they will aim to secure a podium finish in their upcoming match.
