S. Korea’s football coach sacked
The Korea Football Association terminates Jurgen Klinsmann’s contract as head coach of the South Korean national football team after the Asian Cup semifinals
Jurgen Klinsmann, former German footballer and coach, has faced a turbulent period leading the South Korean national football team. Following a disappointing exit from the Asian Cup semifinals on Friday, where South Korea suffered a 2-0 loss to Jordan, Klinsmann has been relieved of his duties as head coach.
Reports of internal conflicts among star players, including a reported spat between captain Son Heung-min and young talent Lee Kang-in, added to the pressure.
After a review, the Korean Football Association (KFA) decided that Klinsmann could no longer provide effective leadership for the national team.
The KFA’s technical director, Hwangbo Kwan, cited multiple reasons for the dismissal, indicating a need for a new direction in South Korean football.
The decision was reached during a video conference between Klinsmann and the National Team Committee.
