Roberto D’Aversa fired for headbutting player

Lecce manager D’Aversa dismissed from his position after an altercation where he headbutted an opposition player

Lecce, the Serie A club, said on Monday that it had fired manager Roberto D’Aversa after he headbutted an opposing player during their weekend loss to Hellas Verona.

D’Aversa headbutted Verona striker Thomas Henry after their 1-0 home defeat on Sunday. The club released a statement that day condemning the incident and dismissed the 48-year-old.

“After the events at the end of the Lecce – Verona match, U.S. Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D’Aversa of his duties,” the club said.

D’Aversa and Henry were shown the red card. Afterward, the manager, who joined Lecce in June 2023, apologized, saying his players had been continually provoked toward the end of the game.

Lecce won five of its 28 league games this season, leaving it in 15th place on 25 points, one point above the relegation zone, while Verona overtook it with their win to move to 13th on 26 points.
