Rey Manaj’s foul on Baris Alper Yilmaz ignites nationwide debate
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) may investigate Sivasspor’s Rey Manaj after his aggressive foul on Galatasaray’s Baris Alper Yilmaz in a high-stakes Turkish Super League clash. The incident has sparked nationwide debate, and sports lawyer Anil Dincer has weighed in on potential outcomes.
Galatasaray’s victory overshadowed by controversy
Galatasaray defeated Sivasspor 3-2 away during the 15th week of the Turkish Super League, despite playing with 10 men from the 15th minute. While the victory marked a significant step in their championship quest, the match’s final moments ignited controversy.
In the 90+6th minute, Rey Manaj’s harsh challenge left Yilmaz requiring a stretcher to leave the pitch. Match referee Turgut Doman issued only a yellow card, despite intervention from VAR, sparking public outrage over the decision.
Legal and disciplinary possibilities explored
Dincer, a prominent sports lawyer, outlined the disciplinary scenarios for both Rey Manaj and referee Doman.
TFF’s role in referee accountability
Dincer highlighted that the TFF and the Central Referee Committee (MHK) could initiate an investigation into Doman’s performance. “The TFF President mentioned ‘necessary actions will be taken,’ likely targeting the referee. This could lead to disciplinary action or even suspension,” he noted.
Rey Manaj’s potential penalties
Regarding Rey Manaj, Dincer was skeptical about any retrospective punishment. “The TFF rarely initiates disciplinary proceedings in such cases unless explicitly mentioned in the match report. Here, the match delegate’s report will be critical,” he said.
Could Galatasaray seek action through ethics committee?
Dincer anticipates that Galatasaray might file a complaint with the Ethics Committee.
“The club could invoke Article 5 on filing complaints and Article 14 on deliberate actions. This pathway allows post-match applications, making it plausible for Galatasaray to seek further investigation,” he explained.
Challenges in disciplinary action
While the Ethics Committee can request a defense from Manaj within 48 hours, its penalties are typically mild, ranging from warnings to reprimands, without imposing match bans.
“Ethics Committee sanctions lack severity compared to Professional Football Disciplinary Committee (PFDK) actions. Significant measures like match bans are unlikely,” Dincer added.
What’s next for TFF and Manaj?
For now, Rey Manaj’s punishment depends on Galatasaray’s actions and the Ethics Committee’s assessment.
The spotlight remains on the TFF’s handling of referee Doman, as public criticism mounts.
