The sixth edition of the Presidential International Yacht Races of Türkiye has officially kicked off in Istanbul with the Canakkale Victory Cup, marking the opening leg of the prestigious competition.

Held under the auspices of the Presidency of Türkiye, the regatta is being organized by the Istanbul Offshore Yacht Racing Club (IAYYK), with contributions from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and in cooperation with the Gallipoli Historical Site Directorate, the Governorship of Canakkale, and the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency.

Sponsored by DHL Express, this high-profile sailing event has drawn 34 teams and 400 athletes from Türkiye, Romania, Ukraine, the U.K., and the Netherlands.

The teams launched their sails in a symbolic start in front of Istanbul’s iconic Dolmabahce Palace, and the first stage will conclude in Canakkale on Friday, 25 April.

Four major races to commemorate historic milestones

IAYYK President Ekrem Yemlihaoglu emphasized that the Presidential Yacht Races will consist of four key stages this year:

  • The Canakkale Victory Cup (April 22–25)
  • The Samsun Liberation Cup (May 14–19), described as one of the world’s most challenging races
  • The Cyprus Peace Cup, taking place on July 20, commemorates the anniversary of Türkiye’s Peace Operation
  • The Istanbul Republic Cup, beginning on October 29 to coincide with Republic Day

“We are expecting between 2,500 and 3,000 athletes and nearly 200 teams across all four stages,” Yemlihaoglu said.

“Our mission is to be the voice of our seafarers on these meaningful national days. Through these races, we aim to instill a love for the sea in younger generations.”

More inclusive format for wider participation

This year introduces a revamped format to increase inclusivity. According to Yemlihaoglu, “We have modified the race structure to allow less professional teams to participate by keeping the cruiser classes open. We want this event to be for all sailors. It’s also an important tool for promoting Türkiye internationally.”

Sailing into the future with open seas and open minds

Commenting on the state of offshore racing in Türkiye, Yemlihaoglu added, “There is still a long way to go. Offshore sailing requires top-tier teams and equipment. Our competitors will be on the water until noon tomorrow, which requires intense mental and logistical preparation.

Around the world, sailing is synonymous with the open sea, and we are committed to passing down that spirit to the next generation.”
