Mourinho’s Fenerbahce draws 1-1 with Twente in UEFA Europa League match
Mourinho’s Fenerbahce faced Twente in the second week of the UEFA Europa League at Twente Stadium. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, allowing the yellow-navy team to raise its points total to 4.
Fenerbahce started the match slowly but became more aggressive in the opponent’s half after the 20th minute. However, they squandered two clear chances in quick succession during the 23rd and 24th minutes. Twente took advantage, scoring the opening goal in the 29th minute through Vlap, finishing the first half with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Fenerbahce showed improved performance, increasing pressure on the opponent’s goal after head coach Jose Mourinho made two substitutions in the 62nd minute. The yellow-navy team equalized in the 71st minute with a goal from Dusan Tadic. Despite their efforts, they were unable to score a second goal in the remaining minutes, and the match concluded in a 1-1 draw.
This result raised Fenerbahce’s points total to 4 in the group stage, allowing them to continue their campaign in the tournament.
Mourinho’s remarks
After the match, coach Jose Mourinho addressed the media, stating that earning a point was a positive outcome. He expressed disappointment over missed opportunities, saying, “This is a good point for us. Points earned away in European competitions are valuable. Our disappointment stems from missing two clear chances when the score was still 0-0. This happens in every match. In the second half, we gained control of the game. After the equalizing goal, the momentum shifted in our favor, and we could have won the match. I wanted to bring fresh players into midfield. Currently, we have 4 points, and our goal is to distance ourselves from teams that are unlikely to advance to the next round in this league.”
Mourinho’s comments were intended to motivate the team and clarify their objectives moving forward.
