Fans react to Samet Akaydin’s error

During the match, Fenerbahce’s Samet Akaydin made a critical error leading to Athletic Bilbao’s opening goal. In the 5th minute, Akaydin’s short back pass to goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic allowed Bilbao’s Gorka Guruzeta to intercept and assist Inaki Williams, who easily scored into an empty net. This incident sparked significant frustration among the fans.

When asked if the crowd’s reaction affected the team’s performance, Mourinho stated: “I don’t think so. Samet made that mistake, and there was strong reaction in the first half. However, the team played well, and so did Samet after the mistake. The first half was better overall, and a 1-0 scoreline would have been unfair. The second goal was like a dagger to the heart. These reactions are upsetting, but I won’t criticize the fans. They are the foundation of everything. Still, as I said before, the mistake was not just Samet’s; it was our mistake.”

Results are crucial for Mourinho

Highlighting the importance of results, Mourinho remarked: “In football, the most important thing is the results. During a winning streak, this might not seem as evident, but in times like these, you realize how crucial they are. Athletic Bilbao is a strong opponent, but today, the match was in our hands.”

Challenges with key players

Mourinho also addressed issues concerning players like Becao and Irfan Can Kahveci: “For me to develop Irfan, he needs to stay injury-free. Over the past months, he’s been recovering and hasn’t found consistency. Even today, we weren’t sure if he could play. It was a risk.”

Regarding Becao, Mourinho commented: “You’re asking why Becao isn’t playing. Every defender has unique traits, and I prefer defenders who like to build the play, which comes with risks. Becao has different qualities. But I’m happy with my players. I won’t throw them under the bus.”

He further elaborated on the team’s difficulties: “Today, we didn’t have any midfielders on the bench. I’m not sure if the club communicates all the necessary details, but our situation is challenging. For example, Mert Muldur is suspended, and we’ll have to figure out who will play left-back against Lyon.”

Looking ahead with optimism

Despite the challenges, Mourinho expressed confidence in turning the tables: “We will secure at least three points in the upcoming matches, which will give us a chance to adjust the squad list. Players like Kostic and Oguz Aydin will be added, making us stronger in the second half of the season. I believe we will advance to the next round and perhaps face Bilbao again.”

Protecting Samet Akaydin

Regarding Akaydin’s role in future games, Mourinho revealed: “Fred, Oguz, and Kostic will return for the next match. I need to protect Samet, so he won’t play in our home game. There will be 3-4-5 changes, but I haven’t decided yet. I know Basaksehir well. If I sleep tonight, I’ll start analyzing them tomorrow. If not, I’ll begin today.”
