Main opposition leaders lobby for Istanbul’s 2036 Olympic bid at Paris
High-ranking Turkish officials from the main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), are pushing for Istanbul to host the 2036 Olympics during their visit to the Paris 2024 Games.
CHP’s Chairman Ozgur Ozel, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas are actively promoting Istanbul’s candidacy while attending Olympic events, including the thrilling quarterfinal match where Türkiye’s National Women’s Volleyball Team triumphed over China 3-2.
The leaders expressed their pride and support for the volleyball team.
“Our volleyball players, who beat China in a breathtaking match, have made us proud by advancing to the semifinals. I wish our national team success in the semifinals,” Ozel said.
Imamoglu shared his excitement on social media, saying, “We are marching towards the championship. Our presence here brought luck. Watching the match with our Chairman Ozel and Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas was a memorable experience.”
Yavas praised the team, saying, “Reaching the semifinals by defeating China in Paris is a great victory. It was a huge honor to witness the incredible emotions you gave us. Long live Ataturk’s daughters, long live the Sultans of the Net.”
Besides supporting the national team, the delegation attended the opening of the “Istanbul House” at Paris’s renowned fashion museum.
This event is part of Türkiye’s strategic effort to present Istanbul as a prime candidate for the 2036 Olympics and to promote the 2027 European Games.
The Istanbul House will host various activities until Aug. 9, including exhibitions, game demonstrations, and special receptions.
Mayor Imamoglu emphasized the significance of this initiative. “The Istanbul House is a pivotal part of our campaign to bring the Olympics to Istanbul. It shows our city’s readiness and enthusiasm to host this prestigious event,” he said.
CHP leaders, along with Imamoglu, Ozel and National Olympic Committee President Ugur Erdener, will speak at the Istanbul House, reinforcing Türkiye’s commitment to securing the Olympic bid.
Despite budget constraints limiting the event to two days, it represents a significant effort in Türkiye’s Olympic lobbying campaign.
The Istanbul delegation is also engaging in cultural activities, including attending beach volleyball matches and exploring Parisian attractions.
This visit demonstrates Türkiye’s dedication to fostering international sports relations and enhancing its profile in the global sports community.
