Jose Mourinho’s short stint at Fenerbahce faces criticism over disappointing results
One of the most successful football coaches, Jose Mourinho, had a brief honeymoon period at Fenerbahce. Despite being in a settling-in phase at Fenerbahce, Mourinho’s football performance was far from satisfactory.
Initially seen as ‘result-oriented,’ his tenure faced criticism after being eliminated by Lille and failing to preserve a 2-0 lead against Goztepe.
This drew criticism toward the Portuguese coach.
Mourinho is criticized for keeping players who had played 120 minutes on the field for too long, not making tactical changes until the final stages of the game despite having a score advantage and failing to make moves to counter Goztepe’s pressure.
Mourinho’s statements have also sparked debate. While making self-criticism about his team, the Portuguese coach said: “We are not taking the opportunities to kill the games. We are not finishing the matches.”
He also mentioned the possibility of employing ‘time-wasting’ tactics, using controversial statements such as:
We need to lie down like our opponents. I need to adapt to Turkish football. Our players need to simulate injuries.
