Sweden names former Denmark forward Jon Dahl Tomasson as the head coach of its men’s national football team

Sweden appointed former Denmark forward Jon Dahl Tomasson as the head coach of its men’s national football team Monday, marking a historic move as he became Sweden’s first foreign head coach.

The 47-year-old football veteran, renowned for his playing career with clubs like Feyenoord and AC Milan, will officially assume his role on March 1.

Tomasson’s coaching contract includes overseeing the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with an automatic extension clause should Sweden advance to the finals in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

An iconic football figure, Tomasson retired in 2011 after a successful career spanning various European clubs such as Feyenoord, AC Milan, Villarreal, Stuttgart and Newcastle United.

His coaching experience includes a stint with Blackburn Rovers in England from 2022 to 2024, coaching Swedish club Malmo and serving as the assistant head coach for the Danish national team from 2016 to 2020.
