Head coach Montella optimistic ahead of Türkiye’s clash with Czechia
As Türkiye prepares for their crucial Euro 2024 Group F match against the Czechia on Wednesday, national team coach Vincenzo Montella addressed the media at Hamburg’s Volkspark Stadion, accompanied by midfielder İrfan Can Kahveci.
Montella acknowledged what he described as unfair criticisms leveled against his team, expressing confidence that they will answer these on the field. “We have faced many teams playing with a three-man defense before. They have different characteristics, but we have our own methods,” Montella commented on Czechia’s defensive strategy.
Reflecting on the team’s preparation, the Italian coach emphasized the positive atmosphere within the camp. “Our players share my mindset. Players like Cenk Tosun have said this is the best team they’ve been a part of in the last 12-13 years,” Montella noted, addressing both fair and unfair criticisms motivating the team.
Regarding the pressure of advancing from the group stage, Montella stated, “Pressure has been a part of my job for 30 years. This is positive pressure. We came here as leaders, aiming to progress from the group. We won our first match, something Türkiye hasn’t done before. Tomorrow, we are in a positive state.”
Montella also addressed concerns over player fitness, particularly regarding Arda Güler. “Arda is not in a condition to play for very long periods. We made a decision with our doctor and the player himself to avoid unnecessary risks,” he clarified.
When questioned about tactical decisions and goalkeeper selections, Montella highlighted the competitive environment within the squad. “We have three excellent goalkeepers. Competition in this position is crucial,” he affirmed.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s match, Montella emphasized the need for balance and control. “We are one of the most attacking teams in this tournament. Maintaining this approach will be key,” he concluded.
Türkiye faces Czechia in a must-win encounter as they seek to advance to the knockout stages of EURO 2024.
