Hakan Calhanoglu’s missed chance to join Galatasaray

During his interview, Calhanoglu revealed a past opportunity to transfer to Galatasaray while he was playing for AC Milan. The move, however, was derailed due to Galatasaray’s internal elections.

Reflecting on the missed chance, Calhanoglu stated, “When I was with Milan, I had an opportunity to return to Türkiye. But at that time, Galatasaray was going through a presidential election, so it didn’t happen. Now, I’m at Inter and have extended my contract until 2027. I can’t predict the future and wouldn’t want to raise expectations.”

Despite signing a long-term contract with Inter, Calhanoglu left the door slightly open about the possibility of a future return to Türkiye but emphasized his current commitment to his team in Italy.

Pursuing records in Turkish national team, reflecting on Arda Guler’s Champions League success

Hakan Calhanoglu expressed his ambition to become the Turkish player with the most appearances for the national team. He shared that he admires Turkish football legend Tugay Kerimoglu and strives to surpass Rustu Recber’s record, who holds the most caps for the Türkiye national team.

“A footballer always aims for records. Breaking Rustu Recber’s record won’t be easy. There are still many games ahead, and I hope it will be possible,” he said.

Discussing the evolving Champions League system, Calhanoglu noted his joy at seeing Arda Guler lifting the Champions League trophy.

“When we lost the Champions League final, it was a tough period for us. After that season, we won the league and secured our second star. We’re performing well this season. Seeing a Turkish player win the Champions League made me happy. In the end, a Turk won the cup. I hope we also get that chance someday.”

Physical demands of season, advice on Kenan Yildiz during Juventus match

Hakan Calhanoglu discussed the intense schedule faced by top players, pointing to increased injuries as a major concern. “The fixture congestion is challenging us. Too many injuries are happening. May God protect everyone from injuries. Our recovery time is minimal, which extends the time needed to return from injuries,” he commented.

The midfielder also reflected on Juventus’ recent 4-4 draw with Inter, in which young Turkish talent Kenan Yildiz played a pivotal role.

Calhanoglu had advised his teammates to keep a close eye on Yildiz before the game. “I told my teammates before the game, ‘Don’t let Kenan Yildiz breathe.’ They didn’t take it seriously, and he turned out to be the one who changed the game,” he recounted, acknowledging the respect Turkish players are gaining in Italy.

Who is Hakan Calhanoglu? From Germany to heart of Turkish football

Born on Feb. 8, 1994, in Mannheim, Calhanoglu’s roots trace back to Bayburt, Türkiye.

His father, a football enthusiast, encouraged Calhanoglu’s early passion for the game, which led him to join Waldhof Mannheim’s youth program. From there, he progressed to Karlsruher SC’s youth teams, showing early promise and an exceptional eye for free kicks.

This talent caught the attention of Bundesliga clubs, and by 2013, Calhanoglu had moved up to join Hamburger SV in Germany’s top division.

Breakthrough in Europe: From Bayer Leverkusen to Italy’s Serie A

Calhanoglu’s defining moment came at Hamburger SV when his 41-meter free-kick goal against Borussia Dortmund became one of the most memorable strikes of the Bundesliga season.

His impressive performance sparked interest from Bayer Leverkusen, where he transferred in 2014. During his three seasons with Leverkusen, Calhanoglu established himself as a free-kick specialist, notching up numerous goals and assists.

His remarkable ability with set pieces earned him the title “King of Free Kicks” and cemented his reputation as a valuable playmaker. However, a suspension over a contract dispute with Trabzonspor in 2017 interrupted his time in Germany.

Shortly after, AC Milan offered Calhanoglu a place in Italy’s Serie A, where he took on the iconic No. 10 shirt. Although his initial years in Milan faced challenges, including off-field issues, Calhanoglu found stability, especially as he formed a strong partnership with Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Over four seasons, he recorded 32 goals and 48 assists in 172 appearances. In 2021, Calhanoglu made a high-profile switch to Milan’s rivals, Inter, marking a new chapter in his career.

In 2024, Calhanoglu became the first Turkish player in 21 years to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, a prestigious honor that reflects his dedication and skill.

“I don’t want to brag, but this is the first time in 21 years a Turkish player has gotten the nod for the Ballon d’Or, and I’m proud of that,” he commented after Türkiye’s recent UEFA Nations League win over Iceland. “After all, I’m trying to represent my country in the best way possible. That’s always been my goal.”
