Galatasaray targets Jan Oblak as Muslera mulls exit

Galatasaray has accelerated its search for a new goalkeeper as veteran shot-stopper Fernando Muslera considers returning to his home country at the end of the season.
Muslera, who has guarded Galatasaray’s goal since 2011, is nearing the end of his contract. While the decision to continue or leave has been left to the 39-year-old Uruguayan, club officials have already developed alternative plans.
If Muslera opts to extend his stay for another season, Galatasaray is expected to sign Berke Ozer, the current goalkeeper for Eyupspor. The young Turkish keeper would work under Muslera’s mentorship for a year in preparation for a long-term role with the team.
Should Muslera decide to depart, the club will turn its attention to experienced international options, with Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak emerging as a top candidate. Although Oblak is under contract until 2028, Galatasaray is reportedly monitoring his situation closely.

An unexpected factor may strengthen Galatasaray’s hand: Oblak’s sister, Teja Oblak, has recently joined Galatasaray’s women’s basketball team. The club views her presence in Istanbul as a potential influence on the goalkeeper’s decision.
Oblak, 32, has featured in 42 matches for Atletico Madrid this season, conceding 41 goals and recording 15 clean sheets. The Slovenian international is valued at €25 million (28.45 million).
Meanwhile, Galatasaray continues its strong push for the Super Lig title. A commanding 5–1 away win over Eyupspor in the 33rd week of the season took the club to 80 points, strengthening its position at the top of the table.
As the team chases domestic success, planning for the 2024–25 season is well underway, with the goalkeeping position likely to be a key area of transition.
