Galatasaray has made a series of important transfers during the 2024 season. One of the most significant was the Kerem Akturkoglu transfer to Benfica, a move that brought approximately $13 million to the club’s finances.

This money was critical for balancing the costs of other player exits, which have shaped the current squad.

Where did Galatasaray spend the $13 million from the Kerem Akturkoglu transfer

Galatasaray did not keep the funds from the transfer of Kerem Akturkoglu for long. The club used the money to cover the costs of several key players leaving the squad. Leo Dubois, who had one year left on his contract, required $2 million for his departure.

The situation with Sergio Oliveira, who fell out with coach Okan Buruk in February, was more complicated. Galatasaray paid Oliveira $6 million to cover the remainder of his contract.

In addition, the club agreed to pay $4.5 million of Wilfried Zaha’s annual salary as part of his loan to Lyon. Zaha, who still has two years left on his contract, is expected to return to Galatasaray at the end of this season.

Galatasaray has managed these exits carefully, though the financial strain was evident.

Kerem Akturkoglu’s journey from Turkish Leagues to European football

Kerem Akturkoglu’s rise to prominence began in the Turkish third division. Galatasaray signed him from 24Erzincanspor in 2020, and within four seasons, he became a key player for the club.

He appeared in 179 matches for Galatasaray, scoring 46 goals and delivering 42 assists. His impressive performance on the field earned him a spot on the Turkish national team, where he played in 32 matches and scored six goals.

The Kerem Akturkoglu transfer to Benfica marks a new chapter in his career. The deal secured him a long-term contract, lasting until 2029. Reflecting on his time at Galatasaray, he made a significant contribution to the club. The transfer also brought in much-needed funds for Galatasaray, which was crucial for the club’s financial balance.
