Retired Turkish footballer Serhat Akin was shot in Istanbul’s Beykoz district on Wednesday evening after providing commentary on Fenerbahce’s match against Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Europa League.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, as the former Fenerbahce player was leaving the set of a sports program. He suffered an injury to his leg and was rushed to a hospital in Atasehir, where he received treatment. His condition is stable, and authorities have since arrested all suspects involved in the attack.

Former Fenerbahce football player Akin details attack on social media

Shortly after the shooting, Akin posted a photo of his injured leg on X with the caption, “They shot at my feet after the program; our last words are Fenerbahce.”

This message sparked discussions online about the potential motives behind the attack, though authorities have not yet confirmed any official cause.

Akin’s social media post has drawn attention to the incident and the quick response by law enforcement.

Authorities apprehend all suspects involved in attack

Following the shooting, the Istanbul Police Department initiated a swift investigation. Within days, they captured five suspects linked to the attack. O.D., identified as the shooter, and O.M., who was driving a motorcycle during the incident, were among those arrested.

Other suspects, identified as M.A., I.T. and E.U., were also taken into custody for their involvement in planning and executing the crime.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya provided updates through his social media account, stating, “We will not forgive those who terrorize innocent people and disturb public peace. Our police forces have captured all involved individuals and retrieved the firearm used in the attack.”

Yerlikaya commended the coordinated work of the police and intelligence teams, who swiftly brought the suspects to justice.

Who is Serhat Akin, the Fenerbahce player who got shot?

Akin, born in Germany in 1981, enjoyed a successful football career, playing for Fenerbahce and representing the Turkish national team. He began his career with Karlsruher SC before joining Fenerbahce in 2000, where he played over 150 matches. Akin’s skills on the field earned him the nickname “Kadikoy Bogasi” (Bull of Kadikoy) during his time in Türkiye.

Since retiring from professional football, Akin has remained a familiar face in the sports world, offering commentary on various platforms, including the program he appeared on before the shooting.

His commentary on Fenerbahce’s recent UEFA Europa League match against Union Saint-Gilloise marked his latest media appearance before the attack which has led many to believe that he was shot for his negative comments.

Security response, ongoing investigation regarding attack on former football player

Although police have arrested the main suspects involved, the investigation remains active. Law enforcement agencies, alongside the Beykoz Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, continue to investigate potential motives and whether any additional suspects were involved.

Minister Yerlikaya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public safety, stating, “We will continue to pursue those who threaten the peace of our citizens. Our brave police forces will always do their best to protect our people.”

The public continues to follow the investigation closely, with further updates expected in the coming days.
