The 16th week of the Trendyol Turkish Super Lig saw an electrifying match as Galatasaray edged Trabzonspor 4-3 at Rams Park. However, the clash was overshadowed by contentious decisions from referee Kadir Saglam, igniting heated debates among fans and officials.

Red card controversy in first half

The match’s first major flashpoint occurred in the first half when Yunus Akgun’s clash with Trabzonspor’s Muhammed Cham led to an uproar. Trabzonspor fans argued that Yunus had elbowed Cham, demanding a red card, but referee Kadir Saglam let play continue, a decision that sparked widespread criticism on social media.

At halftime, Trabzonspor Club expressed its discontent through a fiery post, stating: “For some ‘minds’: What is a yellow card, and when should it be given?”

Did ball cross line before Trabzonspor’s third goal?

Another controversial moment came in the 55th minute when Trabzonspor’s Ozan Tufan scored their third goal. Galatasaray players protested, claiming that Eren Elmali had crossed the ball from beyond the sideline before assisting the goal.

Referee Oguzhan Cakir consulted VAR and ruled no infringement had occurred, allowing the goal to stand, further frustrating the Galatasaray players and fans.

Penalty drama levels score

In the 62nd minute, Galatasaray was awarded a penalty following a clash between Dries Mertens and Trabzonspor’s Pedro Malheiro. Initially, referee Kadir Saglam waved away Galatasaray’s appeals for a spot-kick.

However, after a recommendation from VAR official Onur Ozutoprak and a brief review on the pitchside monitor, Saglam reversed his decision, awarding the penalty. Michy Batshuayi converted from the spot, bringing the game level and adding to the intensity of the encounter.

Post-match debate rages on

As the dust settled on a seven-goal thriller, the focus remained on referee decisions rather than the game itself. Both sets of fans took to social media to voice their grievances, ensuring the controversy will remain a talking point in the days ahead.

The clash not only highlighted the competitive nature of the Super Lig but also reignited discussions about officiating standards in Türkiye’s top-flight football.
